Celebrating the traditions, songs, stories and dances of the Tilney and Walpole Villages
"Sharing The Plough" is a project at Tilney All Saints C of E Primary School and Anthony Curton C of E Primary School in the village of Walpole St Andrew. The Tilney and Walpole villages preside over a unique tapestry of rural traditions. From stories of a thousand years ago to calendar customs dating back to the early 1400s, to folk songs and music collected by Ralph Vaughan Williams in the early 1900s. “Sharing The Plough” celebrated the long cultural heritage of the villages through the resurrection of such traditions by the children. The Project started in both schools in the Autumn Term of 2019, with Gordon Phillips and Nicky Stockman working with the oldest pupils in each school across the whole academic year. The village communities were invited to join children from the two Primary Schools in performances of songs, story and dance collected in the villages at the end of the Autumn Term. They recreated a “Plowsilver” procession on Plough Monday in January 2020 before the Coronavirus epidemic caused the remainder of the project to be conducted remotely.
